Various Fat sources and it's types

 


Fats are classified into three types as saturated, unsaturated fats and trans fats. Unsaturated fats are known as healthy fats and saturated fats are unhealthy fats. If You eat unsaturated fats instead of saturated fats then it will lower your cholesterol level when you replace with saturated fats. Consuming too much saturated fats will be unhealthy.

Unsaturated fats

  • Monounsaturated fats – Eating foods that are rich in monounsaturated foods will lower your bad cholesterol. Monounsaturated fats keep your good HDL cholesterol level high. These fats are available in nuts like almonds, walnuts and cashews and seeds like flaxseeds, chia seeds and pumpkin seeds.
  • Polyunsaturated fats – Eating polyunsaturated fats will lower your bad LDL cholesterol. The polyunsaturated fats are further divided into omega-3 fatty acids and omega-6 fatty acids.
    1. Omega 3 fatty acids – it is found in plants like soybeans, walnuts and flaxseeds. they are also found in fish. 
    2. Omega 6 fatty acids –It is mostly found in vegetable oils like soybean oil, corn oil.  

     Saturated Fats 

Saturated fats are solid at room temperature and therefore it is also known as solid fats. Consuming excess amount of saturated fats will increase the cholesterol level. Doctors suggest a healthy diet should have 10% calories from saturated fats. Eating too much saturated fats leads to heart failure, heart attack. Saturated fats are found in animal food like milk, cheese, meat.

Trans Fats

Trans fats is a fat that has changed by the process of hydrogenation. Hydrogenation increases the life of fats and makes it harder at room temperature. Trans fats will be found in processed foods, cookies, snacks food such as chips.
